Professor at Florida State University and Tallahassee artist Lilian Garcia-Roig explores the passage of time by changing nature into intricate surrealist pieces.
The Lilian Garcia-Roig exhibit is being held at Tallahassee Community College from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will be open until December 14th.
Tallahassee Community College Gallery Director Barbara Cohenour said this exhibit will change the way that people react to nature.
“Towering trees are our first response,” Cohenour said. “But, after experiencing Lilian’s work, the colors, details, textures, and play of light across surfaces, attract attention and interest.”
Cohenour mentioned the impact gallery visits have on one’s own perspective due to diversity. Garcia-Roig’s exhibit is a perfect example of this.
“Gallery visits impact viewers because artists present different points of view and new ideas.” Said Cohenour. “Lilian’s work, for example, provides a whole new way of looking at thick woods and forests.”
Mindfulness is key to Garcia-Roig’s exhibit as well as her work, and painting process.
“My current postmodern plein-air painting practice is both relevant and potent to me.” Stated Garcia-Roig on her personal website. “This method achieves an expanded sense of space and time.”
Garcia-Roig captures the cumulative effect of small actions and an ethereal side of nature.
“There is a strong sense in my works that nature is intoxicatingly near and yet unreachable.” Said Garcia-Roig in her artist statement. “I am integrating many moments.”
Visit Tallahassee Community College’s campus and leave with a new view of nature and mindfulness.
“I am not sure anyone will ever walk in the woods again after seeing Lilian’s work without havening a changed perspective.” Said Cohenour.
